Investing in People Really Does Matter

We recently talked about getting candidates to fall in love with your brand. It’s pretty normal to see a ‘cult like’ following for some brands out there, such as Apple, Google, and many big restaurant and retail brands. For the rest of us who don’t have a huge following, we have to really invest in finding the right people. But what happens after we find those people and hire them? How do we treat them and keep them happy?

In his recent book, PeopleMatter: Driving Productivity, Efficiency and Profits through Happier Team Members, Nate DaPore – who founded PeopleMatter in the heart of Silicon Harbor – talks about how PeopleMatter has managed to create a fun, healthy culture of innovators, thinkers and creative team members who truly love what they do. Companies that create an exciting hiring, training, and development process will see growth, retention and higher levels of engaged employees.

What are some things we can do to keep employees engaged?

Create a fun, impactful, onboarding program. Employees want to feel valued and know how they can add value to an organization from day one. Creating an effective onboarding program for employees to meet with different departments, learn how the company operates, and what their role in the company’s success is, will increase engagement and get employees fired up!

Cool Benefits. There are lots of ways that you can provide cool, fun benefits to your employees without breaking the bank. First of all, invest in a good health and wellness plan. If your team isn’t healthy, they aren’t going to be very productive. Now let’s think of some fun stuff: happy hours at work, peer to peer recognition, game room, relaxing atmosphere for breaks or meetings, yoga/gym offerings. There is so much you can do in this area to keep employees engaged and excited.

Care about others. One big thing we know that Generation Y cares about is the community. They want to work for companies that give back, offer time off for volunteer work, and make a difference. Allow your team to pick causes that they care about and then get involved and support them.

There are a lot of things we can all do as employees and leaders to improve our workforce. This book is a great start in helping you do just that. DaPore provides actionable examples for companies to follow, improve their workforce, and ultimately increase profits.
