SPARC Hackathon 5 Returns For 18 Hours Of Coding Madness

SPARC’s Hackathon 5 – the 5th annual mobile application development competition – returns August 28-29 at the company’s Charleston headquarters on Daniel Island. Coding teams will design, develop, and pitch mobile apps to win cash prizes in the two-day coding competition.

Last year’s Hackathon 4 included 45 teams, over 100 contestants and more than three million lines of code were written over the two-day event, with “The Black Perl”, a team of Iron Yard students, winning the Best in Show grand prize.

Hackathon 5 kicks off on Friday, August 28, with idea selection starting at 5:00 p.m. The teams will have 18 hours to develop their idea into an application until 2:00pm on Saturday, August 29. App building, deployment, and judging will follow as the event opens to the public for anyone over 18 years of age. The top ten apps will be pitched to the entire crowd at 8:00 p.m. with winners being announced at the start of the famous Hackathon after party at 9:00 p.m.

The Best in Show winner will receive $2,500 and a pebble watch for each team member. First runner gets $1,000 and second runner up, $500.

The competition is open to coders of any skill level. Submitted apps must provide support for mobile devices in native iOS, Android, Hybrid or Responsive Web.

The event is hosted by SPARC Gives, the company’s nonprofit organization focused on technology outreach in the Charleston-area.

“We believe the software development experience not only has the power to transform businesses and how they operate, but bring together people to bond, innovate, and ultimately change the world – a vision we like to share through Hackathon,” said Marc Murphy, CEO, SPARC. “Hackathon 5 will bring together the Charleston tech community in a creative, fun, and productive way, and help SPARC Gives continue its mission of technology education and advocacy.”
